Like the swimming events, the womens' diving events were held in the
McDonalds swim stadium on the University of Southern California campus,
which was built for the Olympic Games but remained afterward as a facility
available to the children of the neighborhood. The bleachers provided
an even better view of the diving events than the swimming events.
From a photographic point of view, the diving presented
similar challenges to the swimming events. The major difference was
that the competitors in diving started in the air, rather than the water,
and were therefore closer to the bleachers viewpoint. Also, the water
was not churned up as much for the diving events as for the swimming.
While the difficulty in swimming was capturing the
competitors in the water (as opposed to just churned up water with a
competitor somewhere in the middle) the problem of capturing a diver
in her event was timing. You have no idea of how many pictures I took
of feet entering the water!
Once again, I took most of the photographs of the
competitors on the board before beginning their dive to avoid this problem.
I did manage to get a few pictures of actual dives however.
