The swimming and diving events were held at the McDonalds Swim Stadium built on the campus of the University of Southern California, site of the athletes' village. The Swim stadium represented one of the many sports legacies that the Olympics left behind. Unlike the 1976 Olympic Games held in Montreal, which crippled the city financially for years to come, the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles actually left a surplus that was used to fund a foundation that lives on and provides sporting facilities for neighborhood youth.
While all of the seats in the bleachers provided an excellent view of the competition, we soon realized that photographing a swimming competition from above generates photographs mostly of churning water. I therefore decided to concentrate on the athletes themselves and their expressions rather than the action. Pablo Morales shaking hands with a fan in front of the American flag, Steve Lundquist waving his towel at the crowd after a gold medal performance, Mary Meagher seemingly never leaving the water and Rowdy Gains all provided excellent opportunities for picture taking.
