Like the swimming events and the womens' diving Events, the mens' diving events were held in the McDonalds swim stadium, built by McDonalds on the campus of the University of Southern California to serve not only the Olympic Games, but as a facility for neighborhood youth after the games ended. This is but one legacy of what is frequently held to be the most financially successful Olympic Games ever. Not only were the games conducted within budget, but there was a surplus that was used to fund a foundation that serves as a lasting reminder of that success.
The seats in the McDonalds swim stadium were excellent for viewing the diving, but being on approximately the same level as the competitors started their dives, made photographing the competition somewhat difficult. The problem was one of timing. Often an attempt to photograph a diver during his dive was a fraction of a second late and this resulted in a remarkable number of photos of feet!
From the American point of view, the star of the mens' diving events was Greg Louganis. He became the first male diver since 1928 to win gold medals in both springboard and platform diving. He was clearly the best male diver in the world and the judges scores reflected his superior performance.
