Athletics, as the rest of the world calls it, or track and field as
it called in the United States, was conducted in the Los Angeles Memorial
Coliseum, where the opening and closing ceremonies were also held. The
Coliseum was originally constructed to house the 1932 Olympic Games
which Los Angeles also hosted.
August 8, 1984, the day we had tickets for track and
field, was an exceptionally hot day in Los Angeles. It was over 90°
and we were extremely hot with the sun beating down on us. It was difficult
to drink enough fluids that the heat was depleting from us. I thought
of the competitors; it is often 10-20° hotter on the floor of the Coliseum
than in the stands, and while all we had to do was sit and watch, they
had to run, jump or throw!
Our seats for track and field were not as good as
for most of the other events. We were in the Southeast corner of the
Coliseum in the end known as the Peristyle end. We were 50 rows up and
there was perhaps 300 feet between our seats and where the nearest competition
was taking place. We had had such great seats for everything else that
we were spoiled by them. Nevertheless, we were able to see fairly well
and even take an occasional picture provided the subject was in our
end of the Coliseum.
